The 16 Guidelines offer educators a philosophical and practical framework to cultivate life skills and a greater self-awareness and compassion both in themselves and in the children, young people and adults that they work with. This in turn will support the achievement of academic, career and wider life goals. The widespread adoption of the 16 Guidelines by educators from diverse countries and regions demonstrates how its content and pedagogy can be adapted to fit a range of school curricula.
Example: ARTS AND ETHICS PROGRAMME
Montse Bolano is a mother of three and Fine Arts graduate with over 25 years’ experience as a secondary school teacher in Spain. Attending a 16 Guidelines workshop in Italy in 2007, she developed a 16G inspired by programme called ArtèTIC (Arts and Ethics), which uses art and new technologies to help young people develop ethical awareness through exploring their thoughts and feelings, both as individuals and as a group.
In 2010, after two rounds of testing ArtèTIC as an elective course for boys aged 14 to 16 years, Montse made a successful application for a grant from the Government of Catalonia. This enabled her to develop the online ArtèTIC portal, which makes the content, methodology and lesson plans for the course available to other teachers. The portal is now available in both Catalan and Spanish. Montse has participated in several national conferences to publicise the ArtèTIC project, and in 2013 began teaching the course at Institut Premià de Mar, near Barcelona, alongside training other teachers in the ArtèTIC methodology.
ArtèTIC encourages students to combine artistic expression with introspection and reflection, in a way that helps them become more conscious of their habitual patterns of thought, and of how they relate to others and to their environment.
A range of guided art projects, such as painting or drawing a self-portrait, and creating a beautiful box of gifts for a friend, enable students to connect with the more intuitive part of themselves which is often hidden or ignored. This results in more reflective and positive behaviors that directly contribute to the wellbeing of the students and of the people around them.
Do objects exist in the way we see them?
This creative project is combined with discussion of questions such as: How does our mind work? and How do we know things? Students are encouraged to explore ideas such as: it is the way we look at things that creates our reality; this reality is constantly changing; and that if we can become more conscious of how we look at things, then we become more free.
- Each student designs and makes their own set of reading glasses, using cardboard and coloured plastic film
- The students wear these glasses while drawing a vase of flowers that has been placed at the front of the classroom
- The students are encouraged to discuss and compare their drawings and their experiences
- The students are also encouraged to observe how the flowers change: at the beginning they are fresh, yet later they are dying and need to be thrown away
